The Mindful Exposure Therapy for Anxiety (META) program teaches us how to adapt mindfulness-based interventions to clients hijacked by extreme stress.

Are you a health-care professional helping clients with strong emotional states? Designed for mental and other health-care professionals, the Mindful Exposure Therapy for Anxiety (META) program teaches us how to adapt mindfulness-based interventions to the needs of people hijacked by the symptoms of anxiety, trauma, depression, OCD, and other stress-exacerbated conditions.

When stress is extreme, threat physiology and “automatic pilot” activate, often producing regretted actions in relationships and impairing the health of mind and body. However, fight, flight, and freeze are not the only responses available to our clients. Using evidence-based practices such as Interpersonal Mindfulness (IM) to strengthen the “tend and befriend” response, the perceived threat is reduced, helping to bring about a physiological state that supports compassionate responding.

META combines state-of-the-art behavioral, interpersonal, and emotional processing therapies with scientific findings from the neuroscience of learning and motivation, and also the “sublime states” from Buddhist psychology. In this professional course, we’ll experience META, explore scientific findings, unpack the four self-contained modules that reflect extreme emotional states, and access a model of ongoing peer consultation, including adaptations and resources.
