“Colonization” refers to the impact of colonialism, the domination of one race, class, or nation by another, throughout history. For the colonized, the impact of genocide, assimilation of traditional culture, and loss of cultural identity and ancestral lands has been and remains utterly devastating. For the colonizers and their descendants, the impact also affects nearly every aspect of life, from assumptions about ourselves and others to the choices we make in the world. The process of becoming aware of the negative influence of inner and outer colonization is called “Decolonization.”
In this retreat open to all people, Michael Yellow Bird—a leading Indigenous teacher, researcher, and activist—opens our eyes to the historical and social experience of colonization and how this experience is mirrored in our present day lives, including in earth-centered activism such as occurred at Standing Rock.
Exploring practical examples from the science of neurodecolonization and traditional mindfulness and contemplative practices, we practice together in both silence and group discussion. This revolutionary program combines the latest neuro-, genetic, and microbiome science findings about trauma with traditional contemplative practices to create an experience of awakening and healing.
